Abstract

The objective was to relate and calculate the causality of average years of education (A) and innovation (B). The methodology combines descriptive, correlational, and Granger causality procedures. The study was longitudinal. The hypothesis was that there was a strong relationship and that average years of education causes innovation. Results: a) Average years of education and the global innovation index exhibit positive skewness. b) 69 countries have a negative correlation (-), with 51/69 having a correlation of -0.50. This includes 4 countries in the A-B lag and 10 countries in the B-A lag. c) 31 countries have a positive correlation; 22/31 countries have a correlation greater than +0.50. This includes 9 countries in the A-B lag and 4 countries in the B-A lag. f) The two-tailed t-test yielded a mean of 0.002788183026 with an alpha of α: 0.05, therefore the null hypothesis is rejected. Conclusion: The results show that the relationship is significant (p-value = 0.0028 < α = 0.05), therefore the null hypothesis is rejected. However, the direction and strength of the correlation vary between countries. A temporal precedence is observed (education → innovation and vice versa), and the link is non-linear. Therefore, educational managers should convert educational investment into tangible innovation and, in other scenarios, use innovation to strengthen education.
